A
TEXTILE
GRIOT.

My name is MarieAnn Eleonor Fluker, also known as Flower. I am a Hampton, Virginia–based artist and have been sewing since childhood. I create textile tableaux, living archives in cloth that document the interior lives of everyday people, my own included. I am drawn to the magic of storytelling — the stories we live inside of and the ones we leave behind. My work gives these lived experiences a material record, a fabric page in history. I work intuitively in a contemporary naïve style, bold and instinct-driven, rooted in texture and storytelling.

Much of my material comes from my mother, a collector, a keeper of cloth, a tender of too many piles. From her, I learned to recognize value in what others might overlook. Combined with donated and discarded textiles, these materials become living archives in my hands. They are testimony.

I am a textile griot, preserving memory, lineage, and lived experience through cloth and carrying those stories forward. These textile tableaux operate as both image and archive, where each piece becomes a stitch in a larger narrative about who we are, where we come from, and what we owe to those who carried us here.

My current work engages the Dreamweavers of South Cotabato, Philippines, indigenous women whose weaving practices are inseparable from identity, community, and survival. Through my mother, their legacy lives in me. Through my hands, I am learning to carry it forward.

Virginia is where I landed, where I rooted, and where I continue to document the stories that shape us.
